A very merry McCullor Christmas

Ah Christmas, what a great time of year.  The most wonderful time of the year?  Yes.

Every year Emily and I take the “Christmas tour”, which delivers us to her dad’s house, mom’s house, sister’s house, my parents’ house, grandparents #1, grandparents #2, plus any friends’ houses we can squeeze in.  Sure it’s a lot of traveling but it is certainly all worth it.

This year was especially great for me - our baby is on the way so that was always big news.  We got to spend three nights at Emily’s dad’s house which is always great.  We hung out with my mom’s side of the family for longer than usual and are really getting reacquainted with my two cousins.  I also spent some quality bowling time with about 20 friends at Jamestown Bowling Company, one of Jamestown, New York’s classiest establishments.

Something really special for us was one of the gifts we gave out to the soon-to-beBaby Girl grandparents.  All three sets received a framed sonogram photo.  Sometimes the simplest photos are the best ones right?  My mom teared up a little :)

My grandfather (mom’s side) gave out some vintage jewelry owned by my late grandmother who passed away last spring.  My mom and each of my aunts received a ring that once belonged to my grandmother.  It was a really touching moment, something you don’t often see at my family gatherings.

I can’t wait for next year’s Christmas with my little girl in the middle of everything.  She’s going to be stealing the show that’s for sure.  I might need to add on to the house now to make room for all the pink and purple toys we’ll be receiving.  What an exciting time it will be!

@InsideCyberInk - Our 2010 holiday video.

My wallet feels $98 heavier

With some impressive recon work, we finished our holiday shopping in about four hours yesterday.  My wife and I scouted newspaper sale flyers, retailer websites and our inboxes for e-mail coupons.  After determining which stores held the best deals we left the house on a mission.

Before this holiday shopping season started I had signed up for nearly every local retailer’s e-mail newsletters including Groupon and LivingSocial.  Borders, Hallmark, Target, Old Navy and Kohl’s all gave us some decent discounts, most of which we would never have seen if we didn’t start paying attention to saving cash so early in the season.  The reason?  The baby’s arrival in May. (Diapers cost a lot!)

Here’s the savings equation I used:

(E-mail coupons + retailer “rewards”) + savvy deal scouting = save daddy some dough.

Here’s the shopping trip breakdown:
1.  Kohls - used $10 discount from their direct mailer plus our receipt says we saved $65 off retail prices (if they ever really charge full retail)
2.  Old Navy - save $10 if you spend $50 on an Old Navy card (we’ll pay it off next week).
3.  Hallmark - $2 discount (that’s a lot off a greeting card).
4.  Borders - 40% off any one item with my Borders Rewards membership. We saved 8 bucks.
5.  Target - save $3 off the Laugh and Learn Purse toy.

Add all that up and you get a $98 savings, which doesn’t seem like a lot but when you factor in we’ll be forking out a million bucks for daycare soon, this definitely helps.
